Melody departed on-screen in February that year, which saw her move to New Zealand. Miles turns up in Summer Bay and decides to stick around after he thinks it is a familiar setting. Irene Roberts becomes annoyed with him for stealing food out of the bins, but Roman Harris takes pity on him and feeds him. They later become friends and she feels like she has a close connection. He reveals his family's death to be the reason why he became a drifter. He eventually reveals the truth to Sally, that he is Milco and her twin brother.
He lets Melody leave to live in New Zealand with her mother. Kirsty returns with Kane who attacks him and he has to admit they were never together. After Trey Palmer makes advances on Kirsty and Miles supports her, they reconcile. Trey tries to attack Kirsty, but Miles pushes him over, Miles is then under investigation for assault, later Trey drops the charges. Whilst out fishing Miles falls overboard and is nearly eaten by a shark, he discovers Lou De Bono's body in the process. He promises to look after Nicole after Roman is sent to prison.
Casting
Ollie meets his grandmother Shelley Sutherland for the first time when she arrives to comfort Kirsty. Shelley then takes Kirsty and Ollie back to live with the family in the city. When Kane is released from prison, Ollie spots him in the park and asks him to keep quiet but he is excited and mentions it.
Jai first appears at a refuge in the city when Miles tracks him down. He is cold and distant towards Miles who said he would always look after him following the deaths of his parents William and Nadieen in a tsunami. After initial reservations, Jai takes Miles up on his offer and returns to Summer Bay with him. Jai struggles to settle into Summer Bay House and struggles to connect with people at school.

He later takes in Melody Jones , though she makes life hard for Miles by causing chaos at the school formal and running away to Melbourne. In the latter storyline Miles and Charlie Buckton travel to Melbourne to search for Melody. The episodes marked the first time the cast had filmed in Melbourne. Location shoots took place at Queen Victoria Market, Docklands Studios Melbourne and St Kilda.

Rodrigues joined the cast in 2008 and he told Carolyn Stewart from TV Week that it had been a "whole new experience" for him because he was used to stage work. He added that he was excited about being recognised by viewers. Jai has a back story in which he lost his entire family in Phuket during the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and he met the established character of Miles Copeland who had also suffered the deaths of his relatives. Rodrigues told Stewart that the character's loss created a "connection" between them and it made Miles bring Jai to Summer Bay.
At this point in the series Leah was still grieving for her late husband Dan Baker . Nicodemou added that the characters "bonded straight away" because Miles understands Leah and has supported her when she needed help. However, Miles "cannot deny the attraction" which sends Leah further into denial.
When Ross nearly burns down Leah Patterson-Baker's house while trying to cook breakfast, he and his family realise he needs help. Ross agrees to go into care and Morag offers to go with him. Ross' other daughter Ruby, is warmer to Morag and eventually Charlie accepts the relationship.
Several days later, Kirsty takes Ollie out of hospital and attempts to flee after Kane's failed Robbery attempt. There is a police chase but Kane drops them back at Irene's and is arrested and jailed. Jade Sutherland Oliver "Ollie" Phillips is the son of Kirsty and Kane Phillips . Ollie is first seen when Irene Roberts collects him after receiving a phone call.
He previously starred in the Home and Away spin-off headLand as Will Monk. In 2010, Miles was briefly written out of the serial, while Quong Tart took a break from filming to rehearse for a play at the Sydney Opera House. Dodwell's casting was announced in December 2007, and had completed her drama HSC. Dodwell's agent informed her about Melody's "character breakdown" and she said that it "intrigued" her.Dodwell later decided to quit the serial in order to attend drama school in the United Kingdom.
Melody tries to seduce Geoff at a Halloween party by kissing him which Nicole witnesses. Nicole, angry reveals that she had slept with Geoff, leaving Melody saddened. When he left the series, Sarah Ellis of Inside Soap said that Home and Away "won't be the same without Miles' shaggy barnet". Laura Morgan of All About Soap said that she and her colleagues were "in mourning" over Miles' exit.
